Analysis Center Response Form Joint CSTG/IERS Call for Participation International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry Analysis Center name: DGFI (Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut) Type of analysis center: global___ special_x__ Parent/Funding organization: DGFI within the framework of the German "Forschungsgruppe Satellitengeodäsie" (FGS). Name and title of primary scientific/technical contact: Dr. Harald Schuh, Head of Earth Rotation Section Name and title of administrative contact: Dr. Hermann Drewes, Director DGFI Mailing address: Dr. Harald Schuh Marstallplatz 8 80539 München Germany Phone: +49/89-23031-214 Fax: +49/89-23031-240 E-mail address: schuh@dgfi.badw.de Web address: http://www.dgfi.badw.de If applying as a Special Analysis Center, describe the special type(s) of analysis you will perform. If applying as a Global Analysis Center, describe the global analysis you will perform. Indicate your specific analysis interests and describe how you select the data you analyze. Analysis of IRIS-S experiments Primary goals are: Determination of Earth rotation parameters. Comparison of the results obtained by two different VLBI software packages, Occam and the Mark III Data Analysis System (Calc/Solve). - Investigation of geodynamical and astronomical effects, such as short period variations of the ERPs, Free Core Nutation and others. Describe the computer hardware configuration and the software package(s) you use for analysis. Several Personal Computers and Unix Workstations are available at DGFI and additional access exists to the Computer Center "Leibniz Rechenzentrum" (LRZ) where parallel and vector computers can be used. The Occam VLBI software will be used which was developed by Schuh in the 80ies, and was extended by Zarraoa later within a German-Spanish joint project. Today, a user group chaired by O. Titov (Univ. of St. Petersburg) is jointly maintaining and improving the software. Occam is running on every PC (486 onwards) and there exists also a Unix-version. Detailed comparisons between Calc and Occam were carried out by Zarraoa in 1992 and yielded an agreement on the level of a few psec. However, Occam still needs to be updated corresponding to the IERS 1996 Conventions and has to be improved in several practical aspects. For comparisons of the results obtained by Occam the Mark III Data Analysis System (installed at GIUB, Bonn) will be used which is accessible from DGFI. Since May 1997, a joint research project by DGFI and GIUB is sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The goal of this project is to create a knowledge-based shell around the existing Mark III Data Analysis System in order to accelerate and partly automate the process of data analysis. The use of two software packages in parallel allows the direct comparison between the two programs and between the results obtained by the different software. Internet connection type or bit rate: TCPIP Ethernet 10 Mbaud Data storage capacity: 10 Gigabyte archiving capacity: some Terabyte Describe any planned facility upgrades. - Number of full-time-equivalent personnel assigned to analysis center functions: 1 Indicate which data center(s) you use: within the FGS, VLBI databases will be obtained from the Geodetic Institute of the Univ. of Bonn (GIUB) and from the Bundesamt fur Kartographie und Geodesie (BKG), Leipzig Indicate which of the following IVS Analysis Center functions you will perform and explain briefly how you will perform them: Place final results (TRF, CRF, EOP, and others) in IVS Data Centers: yes Perform software development and documentation: yes Compare products: yes (compare both the products and the two software packages) Adhere to IERS Conventions: yes (H. Schuh is chairman of the IAG / ETC Working Group 6 (Solid Earth Tides in Space Geodetic Techniques'), one of the tasks of this WG is to improve the IERS Conventions with regard of practicability and simplicity of use) Attach a list of personnel (names and titles) whom you designate as IVS Associate Members through their affiliation with your analysis center.: Hermann Drewes, Harald Schuh, Wolfgang Schwegmann Please provide any other information that you feel will be helpful in demonstrating your analysis center's capabilities to participate in the IVS. If you proposed to the IERS in 1995/6 as an analysis center and wish to have that proposal carry over to the IVS, please make such a statement in this proposal. So far, intensive comparisons between the Calc/Solve and the Occam packages have been made. If equal weights of the observables are applied and if the solution is parameterized equally the post fit residuals and the geodetic results agree within a few mm. Your signature on this form indicates your agreement to participate in the IVS as an Analysis Center and to work closely with the IVS Analysis Coordinator. If this is a new proposal (i.e. not carried over from IERS) your signature commits your organization to participate in the IVS.
